Sub-Surface Laser Engraving Application

Sub-Surface Laser Engraving, what we at InSpeck call SSLE, is the process
of taking an image and engraving it inside a crystal. More to the point,
with InSpeck’s 3D cameras you can take pictures of people and engrave
them into crystal! These personalized photo-crystals are wonderful
souvenirs…keepsakes that can actually immortalize a loved one’s likeness
in crystal forever. 

To get your own 3D crystal engraving business started you will need two
main hardware systems: a 3D camera and a laser engraving machine.
InSpeck doesn’t produce laser machines but deals with several reputable

CYCLOPS²

CYCLOPS² is proof that InSpeck never relents in its pursuit of better
quality products. CYCLOPS² is the evolution of Cyclops, which has been
sold hundreds of times over around the world in 2005 and 2006.
CYCLOPS² is better than its predecessor because it’s equipped with a new
camera that more than doubles texture quality. InSpeck has also greatly
improved the 3D geometry as well. With this camera you can capture up to
three people at once and capture hair with ease. The CYCLOPS² also
comes with its own mini-stand, which can hold it upright on any tabletop
surface. It also integrates its own light source, which eliminates the need
for external lighting. 

Even with all these improvements, CYCLOPS² remains fully automatic and
is the fastest, most affordable and easiest to use camera for SSLE on the
market. Thanks to the supplied user’s guide and tutorial, learning to use
this camera is quick and painless; no training required. It’s the camera of
choice for novice users.


MEGA CAPTUROR II

This camera is intended for more experienced users. It offers the highest
quality texture and geometry resolution. This means the 3D picture being
engraved in the crystal will have enhanced definition. Thanks to its larger
field of view (the largest on the market), it can capture up to five people
in a single 3D picture and capture hair with ease. It can also be used to
take half body shots. This camera is compatible with the 360° tool (see
below for details).


MEGA CAPTUROR DF

Unique on the market, the DF is InSpeck’s most versatile 3D camera
because it offers two cameras (DF stands for Dual Field), each capable of
digitizing a different field size. It has a small field [SF] and a large field
[LF] camera. The large field camera is used for SSLE and 3DSP
applications and the small field is used for other applications such as 3D
printing and rapid prototyping processes. This camera, targeted towards
more advanced users, is also compatible with the 360° tool (see below for
details).

PCS SOFTWARE (FOR CYCLOPS² ONLY)

PCS is a basic software package that comes included with the CYCLOPS².
PCS will enable you to take 3D pictures of your subjects and engrave them
into a limited number of crystal shapes/sizes. You will still be able to
export your data to various formats such as DXF and CAD making it
compatible with virtually every laser-engraving machine on the market.


EM SSLE SOFTWARE (OPTIONAL)

PCS is a great software package for users with basic needs. For those who
want to experience the full range software tools and do more, InSpeck
also offers a more advanced crystal-engraving software, called EM SSLE.
This software has a wider range of features such as: 

-NEW! Point cloud import: Import point cloud images (2D/3D)
 and make them part of your pictures!
-Editing tools: Work on the 3D picture using more
 comprehensive editing tools.
-Text & logos: Integrate company logos, brands and even
 personalized signatures in your photo-crystal. These can be
 engraved in the crystal along with the 3D image.
-Image optimization: Enables users to control image brightness and
 contrast as well as offers a texture shading enhancement tool.
-2D photos: Converts 2D photographs into point cloud images (flat).
-Shape & size: EM SSLE also enables you to prepare data for an unlimited
 variety of crystal shapes and sizes.
-More people in the crystal: When people have their 3D picture taken
 separately, EM SSLE will let you bring more than one person’s picture into
 a single photo-crystal. 
-Exporting: Point cloud images can be exported in various formats
 including ASC, DXF, CAD and OBJ.

NEW 360° TOOL!

It is now possible to create 360° head models and engrave them in
crystal. Instead of taking a single frontal shot, users must take multiple
views all around the subject’s head. The traditional problem with this
process has always been the low aesthetic results. The human eye gets
confused looking at two layers of points at the same time (points from the
face get confused with points from the back of the head). This is the main
reason why the SSLE process always used single views. Now, InSpeck has
developed a way of creating 360° models with the back portion of the
head not interfering with the front portion. 

NOTE: The cameras compatible with this new tool are the Mega Capturor II
[SSLE] and the Mega Capturor DF. A more complete version of InSpeck EM
software (ENT bundle) is required as you will need the registration and
merging tools for the modeling process.
