InSpeck EM Ever since it’s foundation in 1994, InSpeck has manufactured it’s own hardware as well as its own software. Back then, EMstarted as a simple editing and merging tool to help InSpeck’s customers workwith the 3D data captured by their 3D systems. A decade later, EM has evolved into something much greater. Tools have been added, functionalities have been enhanced and the interface has been simplified. As a matter of fact, the only thing that hasn’t changed since 1994 is the name; EM has stuck and today is recognized as a powerful software capable of helping its users accomplish their work efficiently and with more ease. For starters, EM’s many tools have nowbeen classified into bundles. We quickly noticed that customers interested inanimation applications were interested in our entertainment tools and not necessarily in our measurement tools and vice versa. Thus, the Entertainment, Measurement and SSLE bundles were created. Here is a look at those bundles and what they have to offer.

ALL THREE BUNDLES contain EM’s basic functions, which are:

- Opening and viewing 3D models
- Smoothing
- Polygon cleanup and simplification
- Registration
- Merging
- 2D/3D texture editing
- Hole closing
- Data interpolation tool
- 3D model editing
- Import formats (OBJ, FBX)
- Exports to most formats (OBJ, FBX, DXF, STL, VRML, LWO, MAYA, HRC, 3DS)
- User-friendly interface

MEASUREMENT BUNDLE
Over the years, InSpeck has added a variety of tools specifically conceived for medical, research and anthropometric applications. Typically, users of the Measurement Bundle (MB) want to measure/calculate surfaces and volumes from their digitized 3D models. That’s why the MB was conceived with tools to answer those needs. Here are the tools included in the MB:

-Volume measurement: this will give the volume measurement of any selected area. Plastic surgeons use this feature to measure breast volume in patients who are looking to have breast augmentation (or reduction) surgery. The results will be in millimeters cubed (mm³).

-Surface measurement: this will give the surface measurement of any selected area. The results will be in millimeters

-Length shortest path : this will give the shortest distance between 2 points selected on a 3D model. The results will be in millimeters (mm).

-Length following surface: this will give the distance between 2 points selected on a 3D model, following its surface. The results will be in millimeters (mm).

-Angle measurement: this will give the angle measurement of any three given landmarks placed on a 3D model. The results will be in degrees.

-Projection measurement: Projection is the measurement of the highest point on a selected surface. The results will be given in millimeters (mm).

-Best symmetry axis tool: The software will determine which axis is the best suited to define symmetry on a 3D model.

-Automatic processing: If selected, this feature can automatically execute certain steps to save time.

-Constructs symmetrical models: Reproduces the right side of a symmetry axis from a 3D model on the left side, and vice versa.

-Symmetrical model tool: Reproduces the modifications done to the right side of a symmetry axis from a 3D model on the left side, and vice versa.

-Modifications toward template: In the case of breast surgery, surgeons can select a pre-defined breast template and ask the software to modify a selected area to take the shape of that template.

-Show distance tool: Using a color scheme, this tool shows the difference (in distance) between two sides of a symmetry axis or between an original and a modified model.

All these tools can help users get the quantitative information they need. Instead of performing physical measurements on a subject’s body, users can perform all the measurements they want on the subject’s 3D model in the comfort of their own office or home, without the presence of the subject being necessary.

ENTERTAINMENT BUNDLE
This bundle contains tools that designed to perform tasks for videogame, computer animation and special effects applications (among others). These advance function have been used many time over for high-profile projects and have proven their use and efficiency more than once. Here are the tools included in the Entertainment Bundle (EB):

-Model Retargeting: This tool will help users animate their 3D scanned models. The technique is to “retarget” a generic model to a digitized one. In the case of a full body retargeting, the tool provided by EM preserves the bone structure, model structure and UV map of the generic model but the animatable model will be an object with he original digitized shape and texture. Once the retargeting is done, the digitized model can easily be animated. This tool can be applied to faces and full bodies.

-Morphing: To streamline the animator’s workflow, EM offers innovative solutions. New 3D morph tools combined with unique surface path definitions for simplifying and re-organizing polygons (or creating NURBS or B-splines surfaces), will give the animator a very powerful but easy to use tool.

-NURBS: Users can define a surface path directly on the mesh surface. Then they generate and edit control points based on the geometry of the surface. The NURBS surface can be created by deforming a user-created template path with well-defined control points to take the geometric form of the digitized surface. For example, the tool can be used to create several animated organic models of human heads.

SSLE BUNDLE
This bundle was specifically designed for the 3D crystal engraving application. More specifically, SSLE means Sub Surface Laser Engraving, which is the technical term for the application. You can read more about this application on InSpeck’s SSLE page. The important thing for you to remember is that the SSLE bundle has been designed to be easy to use and powerful enough to generate excellent results. Here are the tools included in the SSLE bundle:

-Results Preview tool: Lets users look at the point cloud results before sending the data to the laser-engraving machine.

-Point cloud export: InSpeck’s software lets users export the point cloud to ASC, OBJ, DXF and CAD formats.

-Layering tool: Generates multiple layers of points that are NOT identical. This maximizes the final results quality.

-Highlighting tool: Enhances the edges to define the model’s contour.

-2D text/image tool: This software bundle also lets users add text, an image (i.e. company logo) or even a signature to customize their crystal.

-Real time BCG adjustment: Modify a 3D model’s brightness, contrast and gamma correction by simply using the sliders provided for that task.

InSpeck’s EM is a proven, cost effective, well thought out software solution. It will work in harmony with InSpeck’s line of 3D digitizers and it was designed to work best with the human form and free-form objects. Regardless if you are an advanced user of such products or a novice, InSpeck’s EM is the best 3D editing and modeling tool for you.

Note to users: InSpeck EM software may not be compatible with previous hardware configurations. Please consult with an InSpeck sales representative for more details.
